Parlement buitenspel

4 september - Tijdens de regering van koning Willem II werd het parlement zo min mogelijk betrokken bij het koloniale beleid, zo ontdekte historicus Wouter Hugenholtz in aantekeningen van minister Baud. Baud en Willem II vonden elkaar volkomen in de overtuiging dat het beheer van de koloniën zoveel mogelijk bij de volksvertegenwoordiging vandaan diende te worden gehouden. Willem II deed dit vanuit de notie dat de koloniën eigenlijk zijn persoonlijke bezittingen waren, en Baud vanuit het besef dat het democratische beginsel strijdig was met het koloniale stelsel waarbij een kleine natie over een groot rijk aan de andere kant van de aarde heerste.

6 maart - Organisatieadviseur Gijs van Loef wil het maatschappelijk debat over de toekomst van ons land openbreken. In De Kloof voorbij schrijft hij: "De samenleving heeft zich ontworsteld en bevrijd van betutteling en hiërarchische bemoeizucht, terwijl de publieke sector volledig verstrikt is geraakt in zijn eigen bureaucratische structuren. De kern van het structuurprobleem is de rijksoverheid.

Marijnissen tipt boek ScienceGuide
13 juli - SP-leider Jan Marijnissen zit met een stapel boeken reces te vieren. Hij laat de lezers van zijn blog meegenieten en geeft ze tips. Daarin komt ook een door ScienceGuide gepresenteerd boek aan de orde. The Consequences of Parasite Infection for Child Health and Nutrition

The primary goal of this thesis is to better quantify morbidity attributable to malaria and helminth infections, with a special emphasis on Schistosomiasis japonicum. In particular, macro-nutrient under-nutrition and anemia are examined in the context of malaria and helminth infections, and cognitive impairment is examined in the context of both geo-helminth infections and S. japonicum.
